For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.
Isaiah 9:6-7 (New International Version)
The Apostle Thomas took a boat from Israel in 52AD to go to India to tell
the Jews living there about the Messiah, mentioned in the Bible. He had come to bring peace and justice to Israel and to all the world. Thomas came by boat to fisherman village known as Kodungallur in Kerala, in the south of India. Jews were living in India at that time due to the trade that had existed between Israel and
India since Solomon’s time.
Thomas came in contact with peoples from different faith. Upon seeing the
awesome power of the living God, many were converted. He established seven
churches; there is still a church in his name known as Marthoma Church.
Thomas went throughout southern India preaching the Gospel. In 72 AD he
was killed because of his faith. The testimony of his martyrdom is in the
city of Madras (now known as Chennai) in southern India. Syrians, Europeans,
Americans, Koreans and many other Christian missionaries followed to reach India with the Gospel and suceeded in establishing many churches.
The seven nations of the Indian Sub-Continent are still unreached for the
Gospel. These are India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Maldives.
Forty percent of the Asian population live here and it is the seat of major
religions. Injustice, drug abuse, poverty, and economic corruption are the
rule. Many of these countries are politically free, but they lack the true
freedom that is only possible when hearts are changed by the Lord Jesus.
There is a great misunderstanding that Christianity is just another religion
and it has something to do with southern India or the Western World. Jesus
Christ did not come into the world to start one more religion but to save
people from sin, sickness, poverty and death. He came to make our present
and future secure. He came into this world to have a living relationship
with us human beings.
